What the observation can and cannot tell you
Loose fragments, displaced bricks or deteriorated joints can affect more than appearance. A professional should establish the extent and whether the structure or adjoining components need further assessment.
Build a useful appointment brief
Describe photographs from safe ground, when fragments first appeared, recent storm or building work. Share existing reports and safely taken photographs. Unknown history should be marked unknown; do not reproduce a concerning event to collect evidence.
Questions before you authorize work
Ask whether the proposed work is repointing, replacement of specific units, partial rebuilding or a wider structural investigation. Each scope needs a different explanation and handover record.
Request the findings, access limitations, proposed work and unresolved questions in writing. A symptom disappearing does not establish that the system is safe to operate.
