Distinguish clearing from prevention

Removing an obstruction and preventing future entry are separate tasks. A cap may be appropriate after the passage is assessed, but installing one before understanding activity inside can leave the immediate problem unresolved.

Describe sounds and debris without trying to identify a species from a website. Wildlife handling can require a different professional and timing. Ask the company how it will address that possibility.

Ask about the inspection after removal

Once an obstruction is dealt with, ask what evaluation of the vent path is needed before use. The company should document whether the appointment included cleaning, inspection and any exterior work. Clearing visible debris at the fireplace opening is not the same as assessing the full flue.

Choose a compatible termination

A masonry cap and a termination for a factory-built system are not interchangeable by default. Ask for compatibility, attachment and future cleaning access to be explained. Keep the completion photo and product details with the appliance records.
