What the observation can and cannot tell you

Loose soot and hard glazed deposits may need different removal methods. A homeowner cannot establish the full flue condition from the hearth. Ask the contractor to show where the concern is and explain the proposed approach.

Build a useful appointment brief

Describe where material was noticed, fuel and recent use pattern, last cleaning report if available. Share existing reports and safely taken photographs. Unknown history should be marked unknown; do not reproduce a concerning event to collect evidence.

Questions before you authorize work

Ask whether normal brushing is sufficient, whether staged removal is needed, how compatibility is checked and what inspection follows removal.

Request the findings, access limitations, proposed work and unresolved questions in writing. A symptom disappearing does not establish that the system is safe to operate.
